Indianapolis Colts – 2014 NFL Playoff Team Fast Facts

Beginning in Baltimore, Maryland, the Colts didn’t arrive in Indianapolis until March 28, 1984 when Colts Owner Robert Irsay moved the franchise to where it’s been ever since.

This classic team arrived north when the bankrupt Miami Seahawks of the All-America Football Conference were bought and relocated to Baltimore.  Then on September 7, 1947; two years after World War II, the team was named the Colts and they showed up wearing silver and green uniforms–of course that green was later replaced in 1953 by the iconic blue and silver look they are known for today.  It wasn’t until 1953 when they proved to then-commissioner Bert Bell that they could sell 15,000 tickets that they officially entered into the NFL.  (That of course was three years after the AAFC and the NFL merged in 1950.)

Legend Don Shula coached the Indianapolis Colts in 1963 as the team’s third head coach.  Later in 1963 John Unitas led the Colts offense to eight team records and set an NFL record of 237 seasonal completions.

Over the years there have been many ups and downs in the club’s history and in 57 years of National Football League competition, the Colts have achieved a 460-409-7 record, including four World Championships and 18 Conference or Divisional titles.

Indianapolis Colts:
– Started in the NFL in 1953 in Baltimore, MD

Denver Broncos – 2014 NFL Playoff/Super Bowl Showdown Team Fast Facts

The Denver Broncos are perhaps one of the most recognized NFL teams.  This football club was an original franchise of the American Football League and began its fabled Super Bowl wins with a 31 to 24 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII after enduring a painful four Super Bowl losses in their history.  The Broncos beat Green Bay and then a year later repeated the Super Bowl win, giving them their second title, beating the Atlanta Falcons.  It should be noted that only five teams have won back-to-back Super Bowl Championships.

Led by a fan favorite, John Elway, the last three heartbreaking Super Bowl losses were under his leadership and many thought he would retire without a Super Bowl ring.  Elway whose ad-libbing skills enabled the Broncos to advance to the league’s championship game in a span of three out of four seasons and an eventual Super Bowl title.

This comes from humble beginnings where during their 1960 preseason schedule they played to only 4,706 fans, later boosting that number of fans to 21,597 on the first game of the regular season.  The Sports Authority Field now can hold a whopping 76,125 screaming fans who ensure the Broncos never get shut out at home…

Incidentally there have been only three numbers retired in the entire history of this NFL franchise; 18 – Frank Tripucka, 44 – Floyd Little, and of course venerable 7 – John Elway.

The Broncos have enjoyed sell-out crowds each and every year since 1970 which proves the fans are very loyal, often having to brave the harsh winters in Colorado to watch a game in the snow.

– Team started in 1960
– 2 time Super Bowl Winners
-6 NFL Playoff Appearances
– Home is the Sports Authority Field at Mile High
– 4 Pro-Football Hall of Famers
– Best Home record for over 32 years straight; from 1974 – 2006 (191-65-1)
– Never been shut-out at a home game
– Stadium capacity is currently at an amazing 76,125

Seattle Seahawks – 2014 NFL Playoff/Super Bowl Showdown Team Fast Facts

The Seattle Seahawks have only been to the big dance once–and it wasn’t a good memory. They were organized in 1976 and was one of the expansion teams resulting from the AFL/NFL merger in 1970. A group of Seattle business and community leaders started by Herman Sarkowsky and Ned Skinner, announced its intention to acquire an NFL franchise for Seattle.  Almost 2 years later on June 4, 1974, the NFL awarded the group an expansion franchise and thus the Seahawks were born, bringing the NFL into the Pacific Northwest.

The 1986 season is generally considered one of the “ones that got away”. A 5-2 start was ruined by a 4-game losing streak. Improbably, the team then went on a roll that saw them win their final 5 games in convincing fashion. In 1999, the Seahawks made their biggest coaching hire with the appointment of former Green Bay Packer head coach Mike Holmgren.

In 2005 the Seahawks compiled a 13-3 record in the regular season, easily winning the NFC West and clinching home field advantage in the NFC playoffs. There, they beat the Washington Redskins and Carolina Panthers to win the George Halas Trophy and advance to the Super Bowl, the first in franchise history. Unfortunately the Super Bowl was played with controversial penalty calls and even the sports analysts believed that officials had incorrectly called many of the key plays that would have led to a Seahawk’s victory–their first Super Bowl win.

After the game, Head Coach Mike Holmgren blatantly said during a Seahawks rally; “We knew it was going to be tough going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers. I didn’t know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well.”

This year we cannot wait to see what is in store, especially after the sideline interview with Richard Sherman. This will be ONE INTERESTING Super Bowl indeed!

– Seahawks started in 1976
– Only one Super Bowl appearance in 2005 and they lost in the 8th Most Controversially Called Super Bowl Games Of All Time
– 11 NFL Playoff Appearances
– 8 Division Titles
– Home is Qwest Field
– 10 Pro-Football Hall of Famers, 1 Coach
– Stadium Capacity is 71,500
– Fans collectively known as ‘The 12h Man’ and have set the Guinness World Record for loudest crowd roar on December 2, 2103 with 137.6 decibels
– Have never h ad a tie game
– 73 lockers for players and 24 for coaches and 25 for other team staff
