All You Need is Love...and Lockers and Sticky Notes

It’s no secret that we love lockers…but in the past couple of weeks, what we’ve loved even more is the joy that lockers can bring to people. And we don’t mean because they can help organize spaces or keep your belongings safe and secure. Wondering what on earth we’re talking about?

Last week (February  9-15) was Random Acts of Kindness Week. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, headquartered in Denver, Colo.,  was established in 1995 to inspire people to practice kindness and pass it on to others.

“On the surface, it’s a week dedicated to performing simple acts of kindness,” their website explains. “But really? It’s an opportunity to make kindness the norm instead of the exception.”

Their website goes on to talk about the scientific benefits of doing nice things for others, including increasing energy, self-worth, optimism and improving your overall health and life satisfaction. The site states, “[Random acts of kindness] are the easiest way to make a difference right now, in this moment. You simply need to take what you already do, and then add kindness to it.”

So what does all of that have to do with lockers? We stumbled across several examples of students spreading happiness to those around them for Random Acts of Kindness Week by putting simple, positive messages on lockers at their schools.

For example, a group of freshman girls at Port Huron Northern High School in Port Huron, Mich. came early to school one day and taped more than 1,200 “you are loved” notes on every student’s locker.  (Read more HERE.)

Likewise, all of the students’ lockers at Ecole Manachaban Middle School in Cochrane, Alberta, Canada were covered in nice words and compliments to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week.

Same thing at Elberta Middle School in Elberta, Ala. Students there wrote nice phrases on sticky notes and stuck them on their peer’s lockers. They also hosted a kindness social and invited local police officers and volunteers to attend. (Read more HERE.)

Those are just a few of many stories we came across. It’s amazing how such a simple gesture can have such a big impact!

This year’s Random Acts of Kindness Week may be over, but that doesn’t mean the kindness has to stop. Let’s all make an effort to bring a little joy to the people around us, whether with a smile, a happy surprise, a compliment…or even just a little sticky note on a locker.
