January is Get Organized Month! 10 Tips to Get You Started

Declutter

Clutter is one of those things that can not only drive you crazy, but also make your home seem smaller and untidy no matter what you do. Decluttering is a great way to freshen up your home and save your sanity! To avoid getting overwhelmed, start small with something like a drawer, bookcase, or shelf. Take a close look at the things inside and figure out if you really use everything and how often. Take your time and move throughout every space in your home and only keep the things you really need.

Get the Whole Family Involved

Any task is easier when you have help. Get your whole family involved in the process! Delegate certain areas to certain family members, i.e. put your husband in charge of the garage and your children in charge of the play room. Set deadlines and goals together. You all live in the house, so you all should have a role in getting it organized. A clean and orderly house will make everyone happier.

A Place for Everything and Everything in Its Place

Nothing helps you to get organized more than having a designated home for every single item. Invest in storage bins, baskets, a filing cabinet, bookcases, etc. to ensure that everything in your home has a “place.” And once everything has a designated place, take time either throughout the day or at least before you turn in for the night to put things back where they belong and tidy up. Waking up to a clean, organized home is the best way to feel refreshed and ready to take on whatever is in front of you!

Stay Focused

Organizing your home can be a monumental task. Start small so you don’t get overwhelmed and stay focused. Concentrate on one room or task at a time, and don’t move onto anything else until the area you’re working on is completely finished.

To-Do Lists are King

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as checking items off of a to-do list. Prioritize the spaces and areas that are the most important to you and affect how you’re feeling. Create specific tasks to help you accomplish your goals.

Set a Timer

One of our favorite tips when we’re lacking motivation or are short on time (with anything, really) is to set a timer! You’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish in a short amount of time when you know you have a looming deadline. Even just designating five minutes a day to organizational efforts can make a HUGE difference as time goes on.

Don’t Be Afraid to Use a Label Maker

Having an organized home isn’t any good unless you know where and what everything is. Label boxes, storage bins, and files so you can clearly and easily see exactly what’s stored inside.

File, File, File

Nothing gets more out of control than papers. Set up a filing system and STICK WITH IT so you don’t have stacks of paper accumulating all over the house.

Make Sure Your Kids are Organized, Too

Let’s face it, kids have a lot of stuff! Teach them how to clean and organize their spaces to not only make your life easier, but theirs too. Being responsible for their own belongings is bound to make them more careful with the things they have. Give them the tools they need to keep everything organized and put them to work.

Get Organized with Lockers

This is our very favorite tip, for obvious reasons. ;) Lockers can be a great tool to help you get organized! Not only do they add a ton of storage, they come in enough colors, sizes, and styles that they will look great in any room. Check out our blog posts to see how you can use lockers to organize your home and our ideas for creative ways you can use lockers in virtually any space.
