Check out what Ryan McCabe and his team over at Derse did for the new Nike Town in Chicago, IL with some of our metal lockers. This is, without a doubt, one of the coolest things we've seen done with metal lockers--ever.
"We are a trade show marketing firm and we are doing a lot more permanent installs," said Derse Project Manager Ryan McCabe. "I'm in project management and construction so I actually work with our in-house shop and we build what you see in the picture."
Nike Town needed a cool, urban look for it's Chicago location and worked with the company Derse to create the awesome bank of metal lockers you see on the wall when you visit the store.
"Our client--in this case Nike--they did all their own in-house design so they had designers from every reach of the world come up with some pretty unique ideas and they are big on recycling and that is where the whole locker idea came about in trying to keep up with the skateboarding theme and the graffiti on the metal lockers and stuff like that."
Without a doubt, the 'graffiti-ized' metal lockers gives a look that is unique and very eye catching. But it wasn't just a case of buy 'em, take the metal lockers out of the wall and bolt them onto it! McCabe and his team had to engineer this project from scratch.
"Once we got the design and we got the lockers in, we looked at what the best way would be to dismantle them and build an internal skeleton to keep them together and allow them to be hung on the wall," said McCabe. "That is 12 lockers wide and so each section is four lockers wide that is put together so it's manageable on-site to install and we had to bolt them together to the substructure, lay the vinyl on them, paint them up, clear coat them and install them."
Having given the metal lockers a cool new coat of paint, urban looking graffiti and clear coat finish, McCabe and Nike Town Chicago look forward to the reception these re-purposed lockers get when the doors open to the public.
"I know the client was ecstatic and they loved what we did and the final look," said McCabe. "But I believe a lot of the names on there are names of local skateparks, skate clubs or a type of skateboarding name specific to that area, so its all basically tied into the particular clientele that are going into that store."
So. Was McCabe and the Derse team proud of their 'metal lockers art'--? You bet!
"There is a lot of self gratification when you take something that someone was scrapping and you turn it into a piece of artwork that is installed into a store for others to enjoy. It is gratifying."
And how did McCabe find these metal lockers at SchoolLockers.com and BuyUsedLockers.com? Well, odds are the exact same way all of our other clients do...
"Just an online search, actually," said McCabe. "We actually have used some of the newer stuff that SchoolLockers.com sells as well for a project in the Nike San Francisco store where we bought some new lockers but this one was the first one were we got used lockers."
