Beginning in Baltimore, Maryland, the Colts didn't arrive in Indianapolis until March 28, 1984 when Colts Owner Robert Irsay moved the franchise to where it's been ever since.
This classic team arrived north when the bankrupt Miami Seahawks of the All-America Football Conference were bought and relocated to Baltimore. Then on September 7, 1947; two years after World War II, the team was named the Colts and they showed up wearing silver and green uniforms--of course that green was later replaced in 1953 by the iconic blue and silver look they are known for today. It wasn't until 1953 when they proved to then-commissioner Bert Bell that they could sell 15,000 tickets that they officially entered into the NFL. (That of course was three years after the AAFC and the NFL merged in 1950.)
Legend Don Shula coached the Indianapolis Colts in 1963 as the team's third head coach. Later in 1963 John Unitas led the Colts offense to eight team records and set an NFL record of 237 seasonal completions.
Over the years there have been many ups and downs in the club's history and in 57 years of National Football League competition, the Colts have achieved a 460-409-7 record, including four World Championships and 18 Conference or Divisional titles.
