San Diego Chargers - 2014 NFL Playoff Team Fast Facts

Fondly called 'The Bolts' the San Diego Chargers go way back to 1959 and are among some of the original American Football Teams.  Hotel Magnate Barron Hilton discussed having a football team with representatives from five other cities to mull over the idea of having a professional football league; which incidentally became the American Football League or simply' the 'AFL.'

Being one fo the original teams in 1960, along with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Denver Broncos, Dallas Texans, Oakland Raiders, New York Titans, Houston Oilers, Buffalo Bills and the Boston Patriots, these teams and the entire AFL merged with the NFL in 1970.  And since that time the San Diego Chargers have made their mark with several playoff appearances and unfortunately a loss in the Super Bowl where they played the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX.

Except for color changes, the Chargers have basically used the logo of an arc-shaped lightning bolt since the team debuted in 1960. During its period in the AFL, the club also used a shield logo that featured a horse head, a lightning bolt and the word; "Chargers."
