Seattle Seahawks - 2014 NFL Playoff/Super Bowl Showdown Team Fast Facts

The Seattle Seahawks have only been to the big dance once--and it wasn't a good memory. They were organized in 1976 and was one of the expansion teams resulting from the AFL/NFL merger in 1970. A group of Seattle business and community leaders started by Herman Sarkowsky and Ned Skinner, announced its intention to acquire an NFL franchise for Seattle.  Almost 2 years later on June 4, 1974, the NFL awarded the group an expansion franchise and thus the Seahawks were born, bringing the NFL into the Pacific Northwest.

The 1986 season is generally considered one of the "ones that got away". A 5-2 start was ruined by a 4-game losing streak. Improbably, the team then went on a roll that saw them win their final 5 games in convincing fashion. In 1999, the Seahawks made their biggest coaching hire with the appointment of former Green Bay Packer head coach Mike Holmgren.

In 2005 the Seahawks compiled a 13-3 record in the regular season, easily winning the NFC West and clinching home field advantage in the NFC playoffs. There, they beat the Washington Redskins and Carolina Panthers to win the George Halas Trophy and advance to the Super Bowl, the first in franchise history. Unfortunately the Super Bowl was played with controversial penalty calls and even the sports analysts believed that officials had incorrectly called many of the key plays that would have led to a Seahawk's victory--their first Super Bowl win.

After the game, Head Coach Mike Holmgren blatantly said during a Seahawks rally; "We knew it was going to be tough going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers. I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well."

This year we cannot wait to see what is in store, especially after the sideline interview with Richard Sherman. This will be ONE INTERESTING Super Bowl indeed!
